TJX is the largest off-price retailer in the United States with FY2015 worldwide sales turnover of nearly $30 billion. Besides the United States (76% of sales), the company also operates in Canada (10% of sales) and Europe (14% of sales).
In the U.S. TJX is known by the names of its three popular chains: Marshalls, TJ Maxx and HomeGoods, while in Canada it operates under the names Marshalls, Winners and HomeSense.
TJX first entered the European market in 1994 with the opening of TK Maxx stores in the UK and Ireland. The European stores operate under the division TJX Europe. The majority of sales (92%) generated in the TJX Europe division are via the TK Maxx store concept but HomeSense has grown since it was first introduced in the UK in 2008. As of February 2015, there were 407 TK Maxx and 33 HomeSense stores operating in four European countries (UK, Ireland, Germany and Poland).
During Spring 2015, TJX Europe added a 5th country to the list when it opened stores in Austria. More recently (November 2015), the number the country number has risen to 6 as TK Maxx stores were opened in the Netherlands, in Rotterdam and Eindhoven.
The launch of TKMaxx.com in 2009 as an e-commerce platform within the UK region has been very successful, and with e-commerce mentioned by CEO, Carol Meyrowitz as a specific growth area, one can assume each national TK Maxx website (TKMaxx.ie, TKMaxx.de, TKMaxx.pl, TKMaxxOnline.at and TKMaxx.nl) will transition into fully functional webshops in the near future.
