With a new store opening on the Noordeinde/Hoogstraat in The Hague this weekend, H2H puts its fashion focus on the American designer lifestyle brand Michael Kors, the company's worldwide business, retail partners and trend direction for its Fall 2014 collections in apparel, shoes, handbags, jewelry, watches and accessories.
Michael Kors first came onto the fashion scene in the early 1980s, when he created a high-end women's wear collection carried by prominent retailers such as Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor. The brand went bankrupt in the early '90s. A few years later he relaunched a women's collection under his name and at the same time was name creative director for fashion house Celine. He successfully turned around the ailing Celine business during his 5 year tenure, leaving in 2003.
Over the past 11 years, Michael Kors, the Long Island native who was born Karl Anderson, has become a household name with worldwide recognition. In 2003 he earned a second Designer of the Year Award from the Council of Fashion Designers (CFDA), this time for his menswear collection. Beginning in 2004, he served for 10 seasons as a judge on the highly popular fashion reality TV program Project Runway, departing at the end of 2012. In 2010, he became the youngest ever recipient of the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers (CFDA). Earlier this year, Forbes magazine reported that Michael Kors personal wealth had surpassed one billion U.S. dollars. He is the Honorary Chairman of the company which bares his name.
The growth of the Michael Kors fashion business continues to run at a torrid pace since it went public in 2011. Earlier this month, the company announced 1st quarter 2015 (April-June 2014) sales revenue were up 43% to $919.2 million. The increase came from both its wholesale (customers include Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy's, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, Harrods, John Lewis, House of Fraser, Stylebop, Zalando) and retail (store count at the end of fiscal year 2014 was 405) divisions. The brand's largest market is North America, where it reported a comp sales increase of 18.7%. But it is the international marketplace which provides the biggest growth opportunity for the company. Its second largest market, Europe, generated a 54% increase in comp sales for the quarter.
The Michael Kors boutique which opened in The Hague this past week is its 94th European location and 5th brand store in the Netherlands (regular price stores are in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague; outlet stores are in Lelystad, Roermond). Below is a breakout by country of the Michael Kors retail stores located in Europe (as of end-of-month August 2014).

While ready-to-wear is an important piece of the Michael Kors lifestyle brand collections for women and men, under both the higher-end Michael Kors and the more commercially-priced MICHAEL Michael Kors labels, the categories which drive the bulk of the brand's sales volume are handbags, footwear, eyewear, beauty and small leather goods, where it has gained market share at the expense of competitor Coach.
