2014 World Cup Fever Kicks In

The 2014 World Cup may be taking place on some distant continent, not even on the same hemisphere we are, but that won't stop football fever (soccer for Americans) from taking over major cities in lots of countries whose national teams are considered contenders for the 2014 title. This excitement is what creates a brilliant secondary industry of national football team World Cup 2014 merchandise, souvenirs and party favors.

Here in the Netherlands, all Dutch people are Hollanders during the World Cup and other international football competions, like the European Football Championships and Olympics. Any other time of the year, that isn't the case, since Holland is only a region within the Netherlands. All Hollanders are from the Netherlands, but not all Dutch people are Hollanders. For more clarification on what that means, click here. Because the color of Holland is orange (the Dutch King is a descendant of the royal House of Orange). So as one would imagine, orange will be seen everywhere here in Holland during the World Cup (not unlike King's Day in April). If the Netherlands does as well as they did 4 years ago, the excitement will continue from the first kickoff on June 12th right through the finals on July 13.

But Holland is also international, with a large population of expats living in the Netherlands, in cities like Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Breda and Eindhoven. The Hague's large expat community are often employees of international and European organizations (such as the European Patent Office, International Criminal Court, Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons), or the more than one hundred embassies, consulates and missions located in the city. The Hague is not the capital of the Netherlands, but it is the seat of the Dutch government (including the royal family).

What all of this means is that amid the sea of orange, expect to find islands of red (Spain, Portugal), light blue (Italy), dark blue (France, Greece), white (England, Germany) and yellow (Australia).
