AMAZON EXPANDS .NL WEBSHOP
On Tuesday March 10th, Amazon officially expanded its Dutch webshop into a full marketplace. For the past 5 years, Amazon Netherlands had only sold digital e-books.
Amazon launched its Netherlands webshop back in November 2014, but up until now, it has only sold e-books. Customers in the Netherlands have had to shop the Amazon Germany webshop for all other products. Fortunately, Amazon did see the potential to build a Dutch business through the German site. The option to shop in the Dutch language on the German site was rolled out in 2016 and the following year Amazon Prime was offered to shoppers located in the Netherlands.
Still it was frustrating to live in a country that had its own dedicated Amazon webshop but one which only offered a single product category. Things changed back in January when Amazon formally announced that its Netherlands webshop would be expanded later in 2020. A specific date was not given.
Then on Tuesday March 10th, more than five years after Amazon Netherlands was officially launched, the full-assortment marketplace finally came online.
Expats in the Netherlands may be disappointed that Amazon Netherlands does not offer an English-language shopping option similar to that on the Amazon Germany site, but perhaps it will be a later enhancement.
For now, we’ll need to be satisfied with the expanded assortment (30+ new product categories) and the Amazon Prime Netherlands membership offer that includes free shipping on all orders, unlimited streaming of Amazon Prime series and films, free digital games, free unlimited photo cloud storage and, of course, an invitation to shop all the special deals offered to members during the annual Prime Days event… all for just €2.99/month!
