MACY’S & DUTCH OPPOSUITS
Macy’s, ‘America’s department store’, began selling the Dutch brand OppoSuits in August and this month has announced it will expand the selection with several new Christmas styles. The over-the-top printed suits are now available in 310 of the chain’s stores as well as on Macys.com.
ABOUT OPPOSUITS
OppoSuits launched in 2012 here in Holland with an all-over orange suit which was donned by many Dutch football (soccer) fans (Holland’s national team is known as the ‘orangemen’). The over-the-top orange Opposuits ensemble were widely on display at the 2014 World Cup games in Brazil. They garnered further attention as celebrities and sports figures began donning them including talk show host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel, basketball player Spencer Hawkes and heavy metal band Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor (who made a statement wearing OppoSuits to the Grammy Awards ceremony). In 2014 the company was named the Best Small or Medium Enterprise at the Golden Bridge Trade & Export Awards. By then it was already a multi-million dollar business.
The suits themselves are made of polyester and straddle the border between cheesy costume and playful character, as one can see in the assortment of OppoSuits styles first introduced at Macys…

If wearing the full suit is as overwhelming for the wearer as it is for the viewer, we recommend toning it down by wearing the jacket and tie or trousers and tie rather than all 3 pieces together. This will create a more visually acceptable look, at least for the average person. With a price tag of $100, one could get their money’s worth out of the investment over time. The question is how often can you wear the same pattern and how long until the novelty wears off? The company has done a good job at maintaining the novelty appeal so far.
BUT IS IT FASHION?
Since the vast majority of retailers carrying the brand are in fact costume shops, the question remains whether Macys ability to commercialize fashion trends will in fact be enough to give credence to these men’s suit styles and establish OppoSuits as a purveyor of serious, cutting edge fashion. Stranger things have happened in the world of fashion and with its long list of successes over the past decade, one would be wise not to gamble against a respected powerhouse department store chain like Macys.
