FORMAL SHOES
Contemporary formal shoes for men can diverge a bit from the looks of special occasion footwear most often associated with tuxedos and dinner suits. Whether you prefer a sleeker modern silhouette or one which is more traditional, stick with the color black. Standout (or not) by choosing your preferred upper material… classic leather, high-shine patent, rich suede, velvet, snake, croc or other texture.
You can find formal, special occasion, derby and tuxedo shoes at these retailers:
FORMAL WEAR TERMINOLOGY
A ‘Morning Suit’ is considered the appropriate dress code in Britain and many Commonwealth countries to wear to a formal event that takes place during the day (prior to 6 pm). There are three key elements of a Morning Suit – 1) waistcoat/vest (solid or patterned), 2) topcoat with tails, 3) trousers/pants (solid or striped). It is typically accessorized with a ‘dress ascot’.
An ‘Evening Suit’ is worn to nighttime formal events. It consists of a black topcoat with tails (that should hit just above the back of the knee) and matching black trousers. It is typically worn with a wingtip collared shirt and accessorized with a bow tie.
In the United States (and Canada), a ‘tuxedo’ is a suit worn to formal events while a ‘smoking jacket’ is a semi-formal topcoat worn at home or to a social club. The latter is characterized by both its fabrication (such as velvet, brocade, tapestry or velour) and belted tie closure (rather than buttons).
HOWEVER…here in the Netherlands (and other European countries such as France and Italy), the term ‘smoking jacket’ refers to a formal topcoat similar to a North American ‘tuxedo’ jacket.
It is also helpful to know that in Dutch, the term ‘kostuum’ is typically used for formal wear.
