Nowadays referred to as belt bags (‘riemtasjes’) or hip bags (‘heuptasjes’), the fanny pack of yore is one of hottest fashion accessory trends for spring-summer 2019…
Originally designed for use by hikers, runners and other outdoor sport enthusiasts as a convenient hands-free way to carry the most important necessities (such as house and/or car keys, a driver’s license or other identification, some small change and perhaps an energy bar). The bag was typically worn so that it sat against the small of the back, which is how it came to be known as a ‘fanny pack’.
By the 80’s and 90’s, travelers and tourists had adopted the fanny pack for their purposes. Cruise passengers especially saw it as a great way hold items such as passports and cameras when they were on excursions.
By 2000, SO many people were using them, the fashion police had to step in. Negative magazine articles started appearing and fanny pack wearers became the focus of derisive jokes. Usage began tapering off and fashion retailers all but eliminated them from their assortments.
Fast forward to 2019 and we are in the throws of a major fashion revival. Designers showed fanny packs draped across models’ chests or prominently attached to their waists when they presented their Spring-Summer 2019 runway shows last Fall. Who would have thought?!
